active transport

Noun B2 – Upper-Intermediate

The movement of substances across a cell membrane from a lower to a higher concentration, using energy from the cell.

"Active transport allows root cells to absorb minerals even when the soil has a lower concentration than the root itself."

Because it requires energy, active transport stops working if a cell is deprived of oxygen or poisoned.
