An old-fashioned word for a member of an armed gang who robs travelers, especially in remote or mountainous areas.

"The mountain pass was once notorious for brigands who ambushed merchant caravans."

Mostly found in historical writing or fiction now; "bandit" is the more common modern equivalent.
