gainsay

Verb C2 – Mastery

To say that something is untrue, or to speak against a claim someone else has made.

"No one in the room dared to gainsay the chairman's version of events."

"Gainsay" is formal and rather old-fashioned, and it's most common in the negative, as in "there's no gainsaying that".
