partial pressure

Noun B2 – Upper-Intermediate

The pressure that one particular gas in a mixture of gases would exert if it alone occupied the whole volume.

"At high altitude, the partial pressure of oxygen drops, which is why climbers struggle to breathe."

The sum of the partial pressures of all gases in a mixture equals the total pressure, a rule known as Dalton's law.
