A1 English Level: What You Can Do and the Words That Get You There

"A1" sounds like a rating for steak sauce, not a real ability, which is probably why it gets waved off as "basically nothing." It isn't nothing. It's a specific, testable skill, getting understood on the essentials, and it's worth knowing exactly what that does and doesn't include before writing it off.

What an A1 conversation actually sounds like

Picture someone asking for your name, where you live, and whether you'd like tea or coffee, spoken slowly, one idea at a time, with plenty of pausing. Answering those questions, and asking a few back, is roughly the ceiling of A1. It's not small talk about the weather or explaining why you're running late. It's the small, closed set of exchanges that show up on day one anywhere: introductions, basic needs, simple directions.

The words doing the actual work

A1 vocabulary is mostly the connective tissue every later sentence depends on: about and above for describing where things are, able for saying what you can and can't do, aboard for basic travel situations, comfortable for one of the first opinions a beginner learns to express. None of these words are interesting in isolation. A sentence at any level falls apart without them.

Why skipping past it backfires later

Learners in a hurry tend to treat A1 as a formality to clear on the way to something that feels more like "real" English. The problem shows up later, not now: a B1 speaker who still hesitates over "above" versus "over" is spending attention on something that should be automatic, right when that attention is needed for a harder word two seconds after. A1 vocabulary earns its keep by disappearing completely once it's solid.
