Something added to another thing as a supporting or supplementary part, rather than as an essential piece.

"The workshop was offered as an adjunct to the main course, not a required part of it."

'Adjunct' also describes a part-time or non-permanent academic position, as in 'adjunct professor,' and a word or phrase in grammar that adds extra information to a sentence.
