To involve someone deeply in an argument, conflict, or difficult situation, often against their wishes.

"The company found itself embroiled in a lawsuit it never expected to face."

'Embroil' is almost always used in the passive, as in 'embroiled in,' rather than as an active verb someone performs on purpose.
