A dry area on the side of a mountain range facing away from the prevailing wind, where little rain falls.

"The desert lies in the rain shadow of the mountains, which block most of the moisture from the coast."

The wetter, windward side of the same mountain range experiences the opposite effect, known as relief or orographic rainfall.
