The study or explanation of things in terms of the purpose or goal they seem to serve, rather than their cause.

"Critics accused the historian of teleology for describing every past event as leading inevitably toward the present."

It contrasts with a purely mechanistic explanation, which describes events only in terms of cause and effect, not purpose.
