utilitarianism

Noun B2 – Upper-Intermediate

An ethical theory holding that the right action is the one that produces the greatest overall happiness or benefit.

"A strict utilitarianism might justify a small harm if it prevents a much larger one."

Critics argue it can justify sacrificing an individual for the greater good, which feels wrong even when the maths adds up.
