van der waals forces

Noun C1 – Advanced

Weak attractions between molecules caused by temporary shifts in their electron distribution, present to some degree between all particles.

"Van der Waals forces are weak on their own, but together they give a gecko enough grip to climb smooth glass."

These forces are much weaker than ionic or covalent bonds, but they still affect properties like boiling point.
